What are we learning this term?

Our enquiry question for the Autumn Term 2025 is How do we determine identity?

This term, our driver is Geography.

We will be learning about the geography of the UK (counties, towns, cities, mountain and rivers) and comparing this to Italy.  We are also learning about volcanoes:  how they are formed, where they are located and their structures.

In English, we will be looking at the text ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit.

We will be telling the story of this extraordinary adventure as told through the eyes of the main characters Tranio and Livia.

Then, later this half term, we will put ourselves in the role of reporters and write a newspaper report of the eruption of Vesuvius.

Next half term we will be using the book 'Gut Garden: A Journey into the Wonderful World of Your Microbiome' by Katie Brosnan.  This links to one of our science topics 'Digestion' and we will writing from the point of view a microscopic traveller on a journey through our digestive systems!

In Science, we will be learning about our digestive system.  The journey starts with chewing in the mouth and continues with acids and enzymes in the stomach and small intestine, which break food into nutrients that are absorbed into the blood. Excess water is absorbed in the large intestine, and the rest passes out as faeces.

Our second science topic will be all about classification.  We will be focusing on invertebrates in particular which we will be searching for in the nooks and crannies around the school site.

In Maths, In Y3 and Y4, the focus initially is on place value (numbers up to 1,000 for Y3 and 10,000 for Y4). We will then move on to addition and subtractions, followed by multiplication and division.
