The Curriculum at Dunston
A Curriculum that goes the extra MILE.
At Dunston our school vision is to “Be the Best You Can Be”
At Dunston Primary & Nursery Academy, our carefully constructed curriculum is broad and balanced, rich and varied, providing our children with a high-quality education and experiences that support and develop the whole child. We are committed to making every day count for all our children to ensure they are well-rounded, compassionate people who have a genuine love of learning. We are committed to ensuring that our children are ready for the next stage in their education and are prepared for life in modern Britain and a wider global society.
At Dunston Primary & Nursery Academy, the development of our curriculum vision is based on the context and needs of our school community. Our vision is communicated through the acronym ‘MILE’ (Memorable, Inclusive, Language Rich, Experiential). Our curriculum goes the extra mile for all our children.
Memorable | Inclusive | Language rich | Experiential |
At Dunston Primary & Nursery Academy, we work hard to develop a love of learning that fosters curiosity and stimulates the imagination.
Carefully sequenced learning based on the latest research ensures a positive impact on children academically, pastorally, socially and in preparation for life in modern Britain
| At Dunston Primary & Nursery Academy we aim for all our children to access an ambitious curriculum and achieve the best possible outcomes.
We ensure our children learn about diversity and cultural awareness, as we adapt the curriculum to suit all our children. We want it to be a mirror for them, but also a window to the wider world.
| We recognise reading is a key skill for all our children.
We plan our curriculum in order that all children develop an extended vocabulary and a true love of words and reading.
Children will have opportunities to develop their oral skills and become confident in speaking and listening. | At Dunston Primary & Nursery Academy, we promote culturally rich experiences that support the acquisition of knowledge, both in and out of the classroom and school.
Through visits locally and nationally, our children experience different aspects of society in order to increase their cultural capital. |
Some subjects do need to be delivered discretely, and for these subjects, we may use published schemes which we deliver and adapt in the most appropriate way for our pupils.
The published schemes we currently use are:
Charanga for music
Real PE for PE
Kapow for French in KS2.
