Pupil Premium Funding
What is the Pupil Premium?
The Pupil Premium is specific, additional funding provided to support the education of pupils known to have been eligible for Free School Meals since May 2013, as well as those first known to be eligible at January 2019. The pupil premium for 2019 to 2020 will include pupils recorded in the January 2019 school census who were looked after by an English or Welsh local authority immediately before being adopted, or who left local authority care on a special guardianship order or child arrangements order (previously known as a residence order). Children with parents in the armed forces will also be eligible; a pupil recorded in the January 2019 school census who was eligible for the service child premium since the January 2014 census as well as any recorded as a service child for the first time on the January 2019 school census will be included.
From 2015 additional funding the Early Years Pupil Premium has been available for children aged three and four in our Early Years provision to support children’s learning development and care.
This funding is available to school if your child receives the universal 15 hours entitlement and you claim one of the following benefits:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit (provided you are not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
- Working Tax Credit run-on, which is paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working
- Tax Credit
- Universal Credit – For places starting in the summer term of 2018 (on or after 1st April 2018), or any subsequent term, if a parent is entitled to Universal Credit they must have an annual net earned income equivalent to and not exceeding £7,400, assessed on up to three of the parent’s most recent Universal Credit assessment periods.

How will we spend the Pupil Premium at Dunston in 2024-25?
At Dunston, we believe the best approach to accelerating progress is through personalising the approach to Teaching and Learning for each individual child. With this in mind we spend the bulk of our Pupil Premium funding on staffing. This is split between class based staff delivering high quality learning opportunities and leadership time for the monitoring and evaluation of these approaches.
Central to this is a focus on the progress of all vulnerable groups to guard against any barriers to progress.
How will we know if our pupil premium strategy has been effective?
- Whole school monitoring of pupil progress data
- Progress review meetings
- Termly monitoring by the Governing Body
- Regular monitoring of attendance and persistent absence
- Regular Safeguarding monitoring of vulnerable pupils
- Monitoring of pupil participation in extra-curricular activities
- Pupil Voice interviews
- Capture of pupil and parent voice
A detailed breakdown of the impact of our approaches is discussed on a termly basis with the governing body.
The school’s pupil premium strategy is reviewed on an annual basis in July each year.
