English
Throughout this half term, we will be researching all about James Watt. He was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer who paved the way for fundamental changes during the industrial revolution. The children will use their research to create a biography.

 
British History beyond 1066: How the use of Energy has changed over time (History/ Geography)

•To recognise notable individuals in history and their legacy (James Watt, Thomas Edison).
•To know how to locate different energy sources in the UK.
•To describe the distribution of energy in the UK and worldwide.
•To compare and discuss the different types of energy, their environmental impact and their sustainability.
  
Multiplication and Division Y3
• Write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for 2-digit numbers by a 1-digit numbers with and without an exchange, using mental and progressing to formal written methods.
• Show that multiplication of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and division on one number by another cannot.
• Count in steps of 2, 3 and 5 from 0, and in 10s from any number, forward and backward
• Recall and use multiplication and division facts for multiples of 10.
• To be able to link multiplication and division to solve problems.

 

Measurement (length and perimeter/ mass and capacity) Y3:
•Measure, compare, add and subtract: lengths (m, cm, mm), mass (kg, g) and volume/ capacity (l, ml).

 

Fractions Y3: 
• To compare and order unit fractions and fractions with the same denominators.
• Recognise, find and write fractions of a discrete set of a discrete set of objects: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators.
 
Multiplication and Division Y4
• Recognise and use factor pairs and commutativity in mental calculations.
• To know multiplication and division facts up to 12 x 12.
• Multiply and divide whole numbers and those involving decimals by 10, 100 and 1000 (y5).
• Solve problems involving multiplying and adding, including using distributive law to multiply 2-digit numbers by 1 digit, integer scaling problems and harder correspondence problems such as n objects are connected to m objects.
• To be able to multiply 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number using formal written layout.
• Use place value, known and derived facts to multiply and divide mentally including: multiplying by 0 and 1; dividing by 1 and multiplying 3 numbers together.

 

Length and Perimeter Y4
• Convert between different units of measure (for example: km to m, hour to minute)
• Measure and calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear figure (including squares) in cm and m.
• To be able to recognise regular and irregular polygons.

 

Fractions Y4: 
• To recognise and use unit fractions and non-unit fractions with the same denominators. 
• To recognise, count and compare mixed number fractions.
• Recognise and show, using diagrams, families of common equivalent fractions.
• Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.

 

Decimals Y4: 
• Count up and down in tenths and hundredths; recognise that tenths arise from dividing an object into 10 equal parts and in dividing 10-digit numbers or quantities by 10.
• To recognise, count and compare mixed number fractions.
• Recognise and write decimal equivalents of any number of tenths or hundredths.
• Compare numbers with the same number of decimal places up to 2 decimal places.
• Find the effect of dividing a 1- or 2-digit number by 10 and 100, identifying the value of the digits in the answer as ones, tenths and hundredths.
• Recognise and show using diagrams, families of common equivalent fractions.

This half term, we are diving into a breath-taking picture book named ‘The Rhythm of the Rain’ by Grahame Baker-Smith. Firstly, creating an exciting diary entry all about Isaac’s jar of water on its journey through the water cycle. Following this and in connection with our ‘Rivers’ topic in Geography, we will be creating a non-chronological report all about rivers! Our action-packed class novel this term is ‘The wild robot‘ by Peter Brown.

     

 

Rivers (Geography)

•To know the key processes of the water cycle.

•To know where some of the key rivers in the UK and around the world are located.

•To know key features of rivers, how they are used, how they can change.

 

Light and Dark (Science)

•To recognise light is needed to see things and that darkness is the absence of light.

•To recognise that shadows are formed when light is blocked by a solid object, and to notice patterns in the way that the sizes of shadows change.

•To notice that light can be reflected in some objects.

•To recognise that the light from the sun can be dangerous and how we can protect ourselves.

 

Addition and Subtraction Y3:

•Applying number bonds with 10.

•Add and subtract whole numbers with more three digits

•Add and subtract 1s across 10 and 100.

•To use inverse operations.

•To estimate answers using understanding of addition and subtraction.

English

We will be using ‘The Tin Forest by Helen Ward and Wayne Anderson’ as our inspiration, together with our class novel ‘The Big Book of Blooms by Yuval Zommer’. In addition to this, we will be researching for a non-fiction piece using ‘Who was Queen Victoria? Written by Jim Gigliotti’.

In support of our science topic, we will be immersing ourselves in a range of exciting, botanical vocabulary.  We will use this to create our own impressive descriptions of the character and dreamy forest setting.

Following this, we will then focus on our history topic and, using our subject knowledge and research, create an informative report on Queen Victoria’s life and reign.

 

 

The Victorian Era (History)

•To know when the Victorian era took place.

•To know how the laws changed to protect children and the chronology of when this took place.

•To know what everyday life was like for the different classes in the Victorian period.

 

Plants (Science)

•To identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers.

•To explore the requirements of plants for life and growth (air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow) and how they vary from plant to plant.

•To investigate the way in which water is transported with plants.

•To explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal.
